Neues in Elsenborn

Leider ist der Paraclub Elsenborn wegen militärischer Manöver im September und im Oktober gleich drei Wochenenden geschlossen: Am 23./24. September, am 30. September/01. Oktober (einschl. des Feiertages am 03.10.) sowie am 27./28. Oktober ist kein Sprungbetrieb am Platz möglich.
Da Spa für uns nicht mehr zur Verfügung steht, gibt es leider keine Alternative in unmittelbarer räumlicher Nähe. Nach Abwägen mehrerer Möglichkeiten werden wir vom 22. - 24. September sowie vom 29. September bis zum 03. Oktober mit unserer Caravan in Breitscheid, Westerwald fliegen. Der Sprungbetrieb beginnt jeweils Freitags um 14:00 Uhr. Für den 02. Oktober (der Montag zwischen Sonntag und dem Feiertag) ist noch nicht abschließend geklärt, ob an diesem Tag tatsächlich gesprungen wird. Wir werden hierüber nochmals gesondert informieren.
Auch wenn die Caravan an den Fallschirmsportring Westerwald e.V. verchartert wurde, sind alle Springer vom Paraclub Elsenborn dort selbstverständlich willkommen. Mit DM 42,- für 4000 Meter liegen die Sprungpreise zwar deutlich über Elsenborn-Niveau, was jedoch für zwei Wochenenden zu verkraften sein sollte.

Ein unfreiwilliger Tandemsprung
(kaum zu glauben, ist aber tatsächlich passiert)

Die hier wiedergegebene Ereignisse sind aus dritter Hand.
Es war ein Wochenende im August bei einer Show in Kössen/Tirol. Die Tiroler Tandemmaster charterten sich eine Hubschrauber (Bell Agusta 212), um ihre Passagiere, wie üblich, gemütlich von oben nach unten zu befördern. Zu unserer "Manifestmaus" Heidi kommt ein ca. 60jähriger rüstiger Mann und bestellt einen Tademsprung mit allen Extras - Video usw. Der Tandemmaster erklärt ihm das Prozedere. Aufgrund der übergroßen Augen des Passagiers fragt er: "Hast du alles verstanden?" Der Passagier antwortet: "Ja schon - nur das mit dem Exit?" Die Augen des Passagiers werden nicht kleiner - aber was soll's.
Rauf geht's auf Absetzhöhe - Exit - der Passagier macht alle Fehler, die man nur machen kann. Nach der Landung fragt der Tandemmaster: "Und - hat es Dir gefallen?" - "Ja schon, aber das wollte ich eigentlich nicht machen. Ich bin davon ausgegangen, daß wir einen Tandem-Paragleitflug machen. Ich habe geglaubt, ihr bringt mich auf die Startfläche auf den Berg, von dem aus wir einen Paragleitflug machen. Das ich aus einem Hubschrauber springen muß und im Freien Fall nach unten düsen werden, das habe ich ehrlich nicht gewußt." --No comment!

Joe Kittinger Celebrates 40th Anniversary of 102,800 ft Jump
Forty years ago this year on August 16th, Joe Kittinger set the still current world's record for highest parachute jump in history as well as became the only person to ever break the sound barrier with only himself as a vehicle (and live to tell about it.) Friends and supporters who call themselves the "Red Neck Squadron" are gathering in Orlando to celebrate the special occasion with Kittinger.
Kittinger's aviation career has spanned a spectrum of experiences: test pilot, balloon pilot, test parachutist, combat fighter pilot, prisoner of war, civilian pilot and barnstormer. In addition to his 1960 world's record for the longest high-altitude parachute jump in history, he was the first man to fly solo by balloon across the Atlantic in 1984. In his retirement, Kittinger barnstorms in an authentic 1929 New Standard Bi-plane bringing a genuine aviation barnstorming experience and smiles to thousands of passengers at festivals and special aviation events. Col. Kittinger is the subject of a new Naval Institute book, THE PRE-ASTRONAUTS by Craig Ryan. Recently, he has become known as the "UFO Mystery Man" because of references to him in the publication ROSWELL REPORT: CASE CLOSED issued by the Air Force.
Marking the 40th Anniversary, the International Society of Aviation Barnstorming Historians is issuing limited edition commemorative postal covers featuring an illustration of Kittinger's 1960 world record parachute leap from a high altitude balloon at 102,800'. The covers are being specially canceled at the site of the jump in Alamogordo, New Mexico, and will be numbered and signed by Col. Kittinger. Honoring Kittinger's military service to his country as an Air Force pilot and prisoner of war during the Vietnam War, the covers utilize the postal flag envelope, Scott US U642. Proceeds will benefit the ISABH's education and research programs. Covers may be obtained for $10 each with a SASE from: Kittinger 40th Covers, ISABH, Box 1535, Corinth, MS 38835-1535.

According to Craig Fronk, one of the producers of the skydiving feature film "Cutaway," release of the movie is temporarily delayed. Artisan Entertainment, which bought the rights to "Cutaway," is taking the company public and is concentrating on that effort right now, reports Fronk. All wrapped features to which it owns the rights are on hold until further notice.

World Top POP John Crowhurst is currently in negotiations with New Zealand and Thailand to determine the location for the next POPS World Meet in February 2002. The POPS World Meet is held every two years, always at different, often exotic, locations around the globe.
